To see if your device and TV are compatible with casting, please visit this link: https://kinema.com/compatibility.

Kinema supports Airplay and Chromecast. If you do not have a TV compatible with either, we recommend using an HDMI cable. Screen Mirroring feature on Smart TVs is not supported due to DRM (film privacy) protections.

AirPlay

If you have an Apple TV or an AirPlay 2-compatible device, you can use AirPlay to stream Kinema from your iPhone, iPad, or Mac using Safari. Please ensure your TV is compatible with Airplay and that you are using Safari as your browser.

  1. Connect your iPhone or iPad to the same Wi-Fi network as your AirPlay 2-compatible device.

  2. Make sure AirPlay is enabled on your AirPlay 2-compatible device.

  3. Open Kinema on Safari on your Mac, iPhone, or iPad and start watching by clicking on Play

  4. Once the film has started playing, select the AirPlay icon in the Player to starting casting.

  5. Choose the device that you want to AirPlay to.

  6. When casting from a Mac or iOS device to a television for the first time, a 4 digit code may appear on the tv screen. This will need to be entered on your computer or mobile device to proceed to cast.

*Airplay is only supported on Apple TV generation 4 and higher or a Smart TV enabled with Airplay Generation 2. Airplay generation 2 is typically available on smart tvs produced in or after 2018

Chromecast

If you have a Chromecast device or TV that is compatible with Chromecast, you can cast Kinema from your phone, tablet, or computer to your TV using a Chrome Browser.

  1. Make sure your computer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Chromecast.

  2. Open Kinema on Chrome browser and start watching by pressing play

  3. Once the film is playing click the Google Cast button rectangle with Wi-Fi symbol
Cast button missing? Go to Google's Missing the Cast button article (see screenshot below)

  4. Choose the device that you want to cast to.

HDMI Cable Connection

What you need:

  1. An HDMI 2.0+ cable and possibly an adapter

  2. A TV that supports HDCP 2.1+

If using an HDMI cable to connect your computer to your TV, please note that the computer must be connected directly to the TV using only an HDMI cable. If you need any additional adapters or dongles to make the connection, this will not work as any additional dongles or adapters may not support the security encoding on our films.

To watch on your TV using HDMI:

  1. Connect one end of the HDMI cable into an available HDMI port on the TV. Take note of the HDMI input number it is being connected to.

  2. Plug the other end of the cable into your laptop's HDMI out port

  3. Set the TV to the HDMI Input port that the computer is connected to using the source or display button on your TV remote.

  4. Open Kinema on your computer with Chrome or Safari and start watching.

  5. If your computer's display does not automatically appear on your television screen, you may need to have the computer manually detect the display.

  6. Windows: Right-click on the desktop > Display Settings > Click Detect > Click the "Multiple displays" drop-down box and select "Duplicate these displays") > Click Apply.

  7. Mac: Go to the Apple Menu > choose System Preferences > Choose the “Displays” panel > Hold down the “Option” key to show the “Detect Displays” button – note that it replaces the ‘Gather Windows’ button > Click on “Detect Displays” while holding down Option to use the function as intended.

Troubleshooting

I’m only seeing a black screen with or without sound:

This may be related to Digital Rights Management (DRM) restrictions. DRM is a technology used by content providers to protect copyrighted material from unauthorized distribution or copying. It imposes certain limitations on how content can be played or displayed. Possible solutions:

  • Ensure you do not have any screen recording or sharing applications open.

  • Disable any ad-blocking software.

  • Disable browser plug-ins.

  • Clear your browser cache.

  • Do not watch Incognito.

  • Do not attempt to screen mirror

    • Screen mirroring generally does not work with most streaming services due to digital rights management (DRM) restrictions that prevent unauthorized copying of content, meaning you will likely see a black screen when attempting to mirror these apps.
